Al Karaana Lagoon in Doha is exactly what people say is: serene and peaceful. It is home to some of the most exotic wildlife habitats for all kinds of birds and fish and green space. Some of the most stunning portions of the lagoon are the three artificial lagoons created to keep millions of cubic meters of treated water from the treatment plant. It is a safe haven for a range of wildlife like birds, fish, frogs.

Once home to 10 lagoons not in the same insulating layer, Al- Karaana Lagoon was once used to receive at least 6,000 cubic meters of industrial wastewater which led to gathering of sediments and solids at the bottom of the lagoons and the formation of a contaminated layer in most areas.

Reclaiming and rehabilitation of Al Karaana Lagoon Doha

Reclaiming and rehabilitation of Al Karaana Lagoon Doha

The project was reclaimed and re-established by washing away the old lagoons and treating the contaminated soil, with professional help to evaluate the pollution levels and treat the contaminated sediments at the site, in order to recreate the natural area and protect the environment.

One of the most important components of the project are the three artificial lagoons which were designed to store about 2.4 million cubic metres of treated sewage effluent coming from Al Karaana treatment plant, one of the many places to visit in Qatar.

The wildlife like the birds, swans, fish, frogs and others, have their natural habitat in this artificial lagoon with clean water and green areas.  With a storage capacity of 1.2 million cubic metre of liquid waste is a part of the project which includes two temporary evaporations. Protected with a strong insulating layer avoids leakage of contaminated water into groundwater, the pond is separated by oil units.  It’s been over a year since the evaporation ponds and will be in use till its completion of the industrial wastewater treatment station. The evaporation process depends on sunlight and heat. One of the many things to do in Qatar is to explore the wildlife.

To treat contaminated soil by heating it up to 400°C, a mobile thermal drying unit is used, which is gotten from Netherlands. 40,000 tons of sludge are treated and shifted to a landfill created and built using the best international standards.
