History of Bahrain's Independence and National Day

History of Bahrain's Independence and National Day

In 1960’s the country was a British protractor with several other Gulf territories. The bone of contention was the pearl trading in Bahrain as the country has begun its successful commercial growth with the supreme quality of pearls. With power came envy, and Bahrain was taken over by the Portuguese, then the Persians and later the Omanis, who were also a noteworthy trading power at the time. Bahrain picked up its commercial power through the pearl trading, and developed into a position of regional importance.

Since 1960’s Bahrain was a British protectorate, and the agreement had clause stating that Bahrain would get protection against any sea attack, and also the country was not allowed to have international relation without Britain's permission. This suggested that British has an indirect control over Bahrain in the name of the protectorate treaty. After second world war, riots and confrontations ensued as a greater number of people were discontent by the Treaty. Resultantly on the 15th August 1971 a new treaty was signed to declare the independence of Bahrain from British.  Sheik Isa bin Salman was assigned the emir. Bahrain at that point became a member of the United Nations and the Arab League.
